2. Physical & Chemical Properties
Appearance: White or slightly off-white (can be yellowish, pinkish, or greyish) crystalline powder or flakes. Darkens rapidly upon exposure to air and light, turning purple to brown or black.
Melting Point: ~ 186 - 189 °C (decomposes)
Solubility: Slightly soluble in cold water, more soluble in hot water. Soluble in ethanol and acetone.
Stability: Extremely susceptible to oxidation. It must be stored and handled under an inert atmosphere. Commercial products are often stabilized as salts (e.g., p-Aminophenol hydrochloride, CAS 51-78-5) or with reducing agents.
Primary Use: An important primary intermediate in oxidative hair dyes, used to produce a variety of shades, often in combination with other intermediates. Also a key intermediate in the production of paracetamol/acetaminophen (a common analgesic and antipyretic drug).
Other Uses: Used in the synthesis of azo dyes, photographic developers, and as a corrosion inhibitor.
