1. Chemical Nature & Main Category
It is an organic azonitrile compound and one of the most widely used azo initiators.

2. Mechanism of Action
AIBN undergoes homolytic cleavage upon heating (typically 60-80°C), decomposing to generate nitrogen gas and two 2-cyanoprop-2-yl free radicals.
These highly reactive carbon-centered free radicals initiate the chain reaction for free-radical polymerization.
3. Primary Industrial & Laboratory Uses
Polymer Industry: The dominant use. Initiates the polymerization of monomers like vinyl chloride, acrylates, methacrylates, styrene, acrylonitrile, etc., to produce plastics, resins, synthetic rubbers, and acrylic fibers.
Organic Synthesis: As a free-radical source for various reactions (e.g., brominations, reductions, cyclizations).
